ADHD assessments
Please be aware that as I am not a medical professional, I am unable to prescribe medication. If you would like to explore pharmacological treatment, you must visit your GP for a referral to see a psychiatrist. ADHD assessments with Aster Psychology would suit those seeking a formal diagnosis with the view of non-pharmalogical treatment
Attention- Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder that begins in childhood and often persists into adulthood.
It is characterised by:
- Problems with attention
- Impulsivity
- Hyperactivity
All of which can result in interpersonal difficulties, poor work or study performance and low self-esteem. With the pressures of our modern world and existing social expectations, many undiagnosed women with ADHD will likely experience demoralisation and struggle with their mental health.
Studies have found that ADHD looks ‘different’ in younger girls (e.g., friendship difficulties, ‘daydreaming’, emotional regulation difficulties). It often goes undiagnosed until they enter more intense study, work, or even start a family. This is when it might start to look a bit more like:
- Internalised restlessness/fidgeting (e.g., hair twirling, nail biting)
- Feeling like an endless to-do list running through your head
- Difficulties following multiple steps or increased forgetfulness
- Not meeting work deadlines; chronic disorganisation
- Feeling persistently overwhelmed and unable to catch up
- Irritability/short temper
- Jumping from hobby to hobby
- Binge-watching TV or food/ comfort-seeking
- Low motivation
- Perfectionism
If you have experienced the following symptoms, it may be worth exploring an ADHD assessment. Because many of the symptoms mentioned can also be linked to burnout, depression, and anxiety, it is important that a comprehensive assessment is done using the latest evidence-based tools, as well as working with a psychologist who has specific knowledge and training of ADHD. If you have been thinking about getting an ADHD assessment and wondering if you meet the criteria, feel free to get in touch with Claire.
-
1) Comprehensive gathering of historical data (including childhood, educational and social/demographic info). This can take up to 2 sessions to ensure an in-depth assessment is done
2) Completing several questionnaires and measures
3) Feedback on results and final comprehensive report
4) Option for ongoing therapy for ADHD symptom management
Unfortunately, there are no current rebates available for ADHD assessments. This means you do not need a referral from a GP so you can contact me directly to get started

- To receive a diagnoses of ADHD in adulthood, symptoms must be severe and persistent enough to cause issues in multiple domains of life, as well as be able to be traced back to childhood.
- Common questions or worries: many adults seeking diagnoses may feel worried about the implications, for family, work, or future prospects. Public opinion about ADHD has come a long way and at Aster Psychology, we prefer to see everyone as having a unique set of strengths that they bring to the world. Every brain is wired different, and knowing how yours is wired specifically can often bring great relief of knowing that you are not ‘dysfunctional’ or ‘broken’ or ‘weird’! Claire takes extra care and consideration when going on the ADHD journey with you, and will meet you where you are at. She is happy to answer any queries you may have.
